CENIC by the Numbers

internet concept using points of light as network nodesEstablished in 1997 as one of the first major projects of the California Community Colleges Technology Center, CENIC — the Corporation for Educational Network Initiatives in California — today remains a core Tech Center partner. In fact, its California Research and Education Network (CalREN) is quite literally the backbone of the work we do.

CalREN is a statewide high-speed, high-capacity network that serves more than 20 million students, researchers, and other users at California’s public education institutions, public libraries, and private universities including Caltech, Naval Postgraduate School, Stanford University, and the University of Southern California.

CENIC is in the process of expanding CalREN, as the Tech Center continues its work with CENIC to upgrade campus network circuits. In our continuing look at systemwide services “by the numbers,” this month we highlight the CENIC and CalREN.

The Network

  • In 2014, CENIC’s CalREN backbone spanned 3,800 miles.
  • In 2021, CalREN operates more than 8,000 miles of fiber optic cable.

Circuit Trends

  • In 2005, per-circuit cost based on 100 circuits was $4,500/month.
    • At that time, DS3 (approximately 45 Mbps) was the largest circuit size.
  • In 2021, per-circuit cost based on 347 circuits is $2,500/month.
    • Circuits are now high-speed fiber supporting speeds of 10 Gbps and 1 Gbps.
  • In 2017, the Tech Center installed 58 circuits in total.
  • In 2021, we have installed 277 circuits.

Bandwidth Deployment

  • In 2007, total bandwidth deployment for all colleges was 4 Gbps.
  • In 2014, it was 234 Gbps.
  • In 2021 it is 2,114 Gbps.
  • By 2025, total bandwidth deployment is expected to be 2,778 Gbps.
