A promotional video, Turning Craft Beers into Careers at MiraCosta College, features students and instructors discussing the college’s Craft Brewing Technician program, also known as “BrewTech.”

The MiraCosta program is the only community college certificate program of its kind in California that is approved by the Master Brewers Association of the Americas (MBAA). MBAA certification means the program meets an array of standards, such as preparing students for entry-level positions at either large-scale or craft brewing business, employing a lead faculty member with extensive experience as a leader of an operating brewery, allows for industry internships, and provides adequate facilities needed to hone techniques and skills. Only two such MBAA-approved programs exist in California (the other being at UC Davis), and just 14 nationwide.

Housed in MiraCosta’s Technology Career Institute as part of its Community Education & Workforce Development department, the 15-week certificate program enrolls students twice a year, and leads to direct employment as a brewery technician. At the program’s end, students graduate by serving their beers at a campus tasting room with industry representatives sampling the suds.

MiraCosta College graduated the first class in its BrewTech certificate program in Spring 2019.
