Listserv Breaks Usage Records in March

April 23, 2020

Communication and collaboration conceptsMarch recorded the widest-ever use of the Listserv email distribution service by California community colleges, as communication related to COVID-19 response reached its peak, and college personnel sought electronic means of collaboration with work teams, committees, and colleagues around the state.

Nearly 1.6 million email distributions to individual recipients were sent statewide in March, a 67-percent increase from February. During this time, the number of lists grew to 506, while subscriptions increased to 170,501.

Monthly postings also reached an all-time high of 3,117, up 77 percent from February. A significant increase was seen in general inquiries, such as:

  • New Listserv requests
  • How to subscribe to a list
  • Error reports and how to decipher them
  • Where to find the subscription link for a list to distribute to others
  • Messages not being received
  • How to update subscriber emails in bulk
  • Removing subscribers
  • Adjusting list settings

The last time Listserv recorded such a significant jump in usage was in September 2019, when recipients increased 112 percent. The growth was likely due to the start of the new academic year for most colleges.

Postings tapered off a bit in April, most likely due to many colleges being on Spring break and personnel taking time off for Easter. As of April 22, there were 1,675 postings going to 863,000 recipients.
